Resilient Construction for High Risk Zones
When a fast-moving wildfire tore through Split Lake, Manitoba in June 2025, it should have reduced everything in its path to ash. Instead, one nearly completed community facility — the Tataskweyak Transition Centre — stood tall, virtually unscathed.
The Building That Withstood a Wildfire: Lessons in Fire-Resilient Construction
When wildfire tore through Split Lake, one building stayed standing. The difference came down to what it was made of. Built with ZS2 TechPanels® made from magnesium cement and brought to life by SEKO Construction, the Tataskweyak Transition Centre demonstrates how resilient materials and forward-thinking builders can deliver results that any community can put into practice.

Key Findings from the Case Study

Proven Fire Performance
In wildfire zones, buildings face the risk of ignition, collapse, and toxic smoke when flames reach the structure. At Split Lake, magnesium cement technology combined with a high-performance prefab panel system resisted ignition and held its strength under direct exposure. The Tataskweyak Transition Centre remained standing even as the forest around it burned: no ignition, no collapse, and no toxic smoke.

Resilience Across Extreme Climates
Most building materials fail when pushed to the limits, becoming brittle in extreme cold or weakened under heat. This facility was constructed in a remote northern community through –40°C winters and later faced wildfire heat hundreds of degrees higher. TechPanel® performed consistently through both extremes. If resilience can be proven on one of the toughest sites in Canada, it can be delivered anywhere.

Protection From Day One
Buildings are most at risk before they’re enclosed. Prefabricated TechPanel® wall, roof, and floor systems closed in the facility in days, not weeks, protecting it at its most vulnerable stage. Faster enclosure meant less time exposed to risk and greater certainty from the very start.
Build Smarter. Build Safer. Build Resilient.
ZS2 is redefining what’s possible in construction by starting at the material level. From remote northern projects to wildfire-prone communities, ZS2 building materials are designed for the realities builders and communities face today:
- Safer outcomes with materials that resist fire, moisture, mold, rot, and pests.
- Sustainable by design, using low-carbon, resilient, and high-performance materials that improve cost certainty and reduce lifecycle expenses so affordability becomes a result, not a trade-off.
- Tested and certified, from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to ICC-ES reports, so you can spec with clarity and trust performance both on site and at the permit desk.
What stood at Split Lake can stand anywhere. The difference starts with the materials.
