Exploring the integration of magnesium cement board and biochar insulation for next-generation prefabricated panels
ZS2 Technologies and ECHO Building Systems have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on research and development of low-carbon, climate-resilient building materials and prefabricated panel systems.
The collaboration will explore the integration of ECHO’s bio-based insulation technologies, including biochar insulation, with ZS2’s fire-resistant magnesium cement board to evaluate next-generation structural and non-structural panel assemblies.
Material innovation at the core of resilient, low-carbon construction
As performance expectations evolve, the materials used in building assemblies play a decisive role in durability, safety, and carbon impact. ZS2’s magnesium cement technology delivers noncombustible, moisture-resistant sheathing designed for long-term performance, while ECHO’s biochar-enhanced insulation introduces a new pathway for reducing embodied carbon within the building envelope.
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material produced by heating organic biomass in a low-oxygen environment. When used in building products, biochar can store carbon that would otherwise return to the atmosphere, while also contributing to thermal performance, fire resistance and moisture management within assemblies.
By combining cement-based material science with biochar insulation technologies, ZS2 and ECHO aim to explore panelized solutions designed to:
- Reduce embodied carbon across building assemblies
- Improve fire resistance and long-term durability
- Enhance resilience to moisture and extreme weather conditions
- Support faster, more efficient prefabricated construction
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing material innovation and building systems that respond to the realities of a changing climate while supporting the industry’s transition toward lower-carbon construction.
ZS2 and ECHO look forward to sharing updates as the joint research progresses.
