ZS2 Technologies receives $2 million from Emissions Reduction Alberta to accelerate the development of carbon-neutral cement

Funding to help launch a new sustainable cement industry in Alberta

July 12, 2023 – Calgary, AB - ZS2 Technologies is receiving nearly $2 million in funding from the Alberta Government through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to accelerate the development and commercialization of carbon neutral cement building materials.

In partnership with Baymag, and in coordination with Lithium Bank, ZS2 Technologies has developed proprietary processes and chemistry for a low carbon Made-in-Alberta cement, and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. This patented solution produces high performance building materials while simultaneously solving the need to decarbonize cement, providing both a practical and economic application that permanently sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere.

Making stored CO2 valuable and useful is critical to large-scale emission reductions and diversifying the economy in Alberta. With support from Emissions Reduction Alberta, we’re building a ground-breaking CCS facility to take CO2 from the atmosphere and use it in a high CO2 storage capacity cement material climate resiliency needs,” says Doug Brown, CTO at ZS2 Technologies

Leveraging a circular model through strategic local partnerships, the proprietary science from ZS2 incorporates an unused mined magnesium ore from Baymag, lithium-void wastewater brine from Lithium Bank, with advanced manufacturing technologies from ZS2 to produce a carbon-negative magnesium-based cement (MBC). ZS2’s technology will capture CO2 directly from at Lithium Bank’s site and then integrate the captured CO2 into novel MBC products.  The process provides an industry-transforming solution that produces cement from waste brines and utilizes off-spec products from the mining sector in Alberta.

Alberta is pleased to invest the TIER fund in leading technologies driven by our province’s forward-thinking innovators. This funding is helping our job creators cut emissions and stay competitive while getting Alberta closer to net zero emissions by 2050,” says Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

ERA grant recipients were selected through a competitive review process. A team of experts in science, engineering, business development, commercialization, financing, and greenhouse gas quantification conducted a rigorous, independent, and transparent review overseen by a Fairness Monitor. Funding recipients are required to report on project outcomes, achievements, and lessons learned including GHG reductions, job creation, and other environmental, economic, and social benefits.
